304L contains 18 - 20% chromium, 8 - 10.5% nickel, and carbon <=0.03%. 316L has 16 - 18% chromium, 10 - 14% nickel, 2 - 3% molybdenum, and similar low carbon. The molybdenum in 316L boosts its corrosion resistance.
316L outperforms 304L in chloride-rich settings like seawater, resisting pitting and crevice corrosion. 304L has good general corrosion resistance in mild environments but may corrode in high-chloride conditions.
Both have similar tensile strength (around 515 MPa) and good ductility. 316L has slightly higher yield strength. They are both highly formable and weldable, with 304L being a bit easier to weld.
316L is about 10 - 15% more expensive than 304L due to molybdenum. 316L is used in marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical applications, while 304L is suitable for food processing, architecture, and general industrial uses.

316L is in offshore oil rigs, desalination plants, and pharmaceutical equipment. 304L finds applications in kitchen appliances, food storage tanks, and architectural trim.
