304L contains 18 - 20% chromium, 8 - 10.5% nickel, and carbon <=0.03%. 316L has 16 - 18% chromium, 10 - 14% nickel, 2 - 3% molybdenum, and similar low carbon. The molybdenum in 316L boosts its corrosion resistance.​

 

316L outperforms 304L in chloride-rich settings like seawater, resisting pitting and crevice corrosion. 304L has good general corrosion resistance in mild environments but may corrode in high-chloride conditions.​

 

Both have similar tensile strength (around 515 MPa) and good ductility. 316L has slightly higher yield strength. They are both highly formable and weldable, with 304L being a bit easier to weld.​

 

316L is about 10 - 15% more expensive than 304L due to molybdenum. 316L is used in marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical applications, while 304L is suitable for food processing, architecture, and general industrial uses.​

 

Where are 316L and 304L commonly used?​

316L is in offshore oil rigs, desalination plants, and pharmaceutical equipment. 304L finds applications in kitchen appliances, food storage tanks, and architectural trim.​
