304 contains 18-20% chromium, 8-10.5% nickel, and 0.08% max carbon. 302 has slightly higher carbon (0.15% max) and a similar nickel range, giving it enhanced strength compared to 304.​

 

302 has a higher tensile strength (620 MPa vs 515 MPa for 304) due to its higher carbon content. It also has slightly higher hardness but lower ductility, with elongation around 30% compared to 304's 40%.​

 

Both offer excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric conditions, fresh water, and mild chemicals. 304 has a slight edge in corrosive environments due to its lower carbon content, reducing the risk of carbide precipitation.​

 

304 is more ductile and easier to form into complex shapes, while 302's higher strength makes it better for springs and parts needing tension. Both are readily weldable, with 304 requiring less post-weld care.​

 

Where are 302 and 304 commonly used?​

304 is used in food equipment, medical devices, and architectural components. 302 finds use in springs, clips, and fasteners where higher strength and moderate formability are needed.
